So I set up my wife’s blog url and installed WordPress for her, but she still hasn’t started using it.

Going to give her a link to her Anje Gregory blog anyway so that Google can find her.

I anticipate she will start blogging about Corporate Finance, the JSE and all the things Anje has become known for over the past few years at PSG Capital.

Going to Prague for the MIH tech conference!

I’m really excited about this.. I’ve been given the opportunity to attend a technical conference in Prague in early August.

Focus seems to be around mobile apps, but I’m sure there will be loads of other topics discussed.

I was hoping to fly via Heathrow and pick up a new Macbook in the Dixons duty-free, but it looks like South Africans need a transit visa for the UK now and it seems like too much hassle. So most likely going to fly via Amsterdam on KLM. No idea what the shopping opportunities might be.

Going to be tough to get my assignment completed for Henley before I go, and then study when I get back for my exam in early September.

Core Group not helping grow Apple in SA

I’m in the market for a new Macbook (current one is 3+ years old and starting to feel a bit tired). Wanted to buy in South Africa, took a look at Digicape and other online stores, and could not believe the local prices, particularly considering the current exchange rate below R8/$.

Sure, I understand, we import in Euros mostly, and Core Group apparently took forward cover at a much higher rate. In my opinion, they need to take a knock if they got their rates wrong, and simply cut their own margin. You can’t punish your customers in a global market-place for mistakes made on currency speculation. It simply enforces the view that Core Group is a monopolist. Ok, this one is pretty obvious… you would have to be living in a cave high in the mountains and out of earshot of any internet-using humans to have missed the seismic shift from ‘kinda fresh’ to real-time on the internet.
This is big, really big, and it’s particularly interesting to me that it’s an area that seems to be a bit of a weak spot for Google and until recently some of the other giants like Facebook.
